Originally GOG specialized in old games and while this is no longer true, they've been adding newer games, mostly indie and always drm-free, they're still your best option for older games as they are tweaked so they work easily on modern PCs. Now, for actual recommendations, it would help immensely if you said what genres you prefer.
Anyway here's some recommendations from myself for some older games: FPS: Painkiller, sin, Deus ex (FPS/RPG hybrid), System Shock 2 and Unreal Tournament 2004 (my favorite multiplayer FPS of all time. Dumped countless hours on it). RPG: baldur's gate 1+2, planescape torment, Anachronox Platformers: all the raymans, Psychonauts and the Prince of Persia sands of time trilogy (sands of time, warrior within and two thrones). Others: Sacrifice, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Urban Chaos.
Those are all on gog. Steam also has older games available but they might not work so easily without some tweaking if you have a more recent OS. Anyway from Steam I'd recommend: Final Fantasy VII (now with proper sound!) And Age of Mythology (my favorite RTS of all time!). Homeworld and homeworld 2 are to be re-released soon next year on steam to with remastered visuals.
For the love of god get those games when they come out. The older versions will be available to.
Don't limit yourself to older games. Some newer games are not that demanding. Indies like FEZ, Braid or Freedom Planet will probably run well on your PC. Another one I'm thinking of would be South Park the stick of truth.
Considering the south park-style visuals I don't see that game being very demanding. @neatfeatguy: None of those games are on gog.com. Such accuracy. But they would be good choices yes. I never said they were on the website, no need to come off as a jerk. This is why it's hard to enjoy helping people on forums, you get pricks (maybe they don't intend to come off as one, but do) with thier stupid ass responses.
I simply offered an explanation as to what the website was, nothing more. I only offered some older games that would run on the computer that are good games to play. Here's another game that would be great to play if you want a great space sim: Freelancer Wait! No, you can't find that game on gog.com so you can't get it.Holy crap the end is nigh! @neatfeatguy: I assure you I didn't mean to come accross as a jerk.

I was making a joke. I'm sorry if I've given that impression. I only said that because you were talking about gog in the beginning of the post, no ill intentions. If you read my entre post you will also notice I mentioned games that are not on gog (FFVII, Age of mythology.) so of course he can buy them. GOG does have the added bonuses of drm-free and tweaking of older games so they're more guaranteed to work. Also they're having a sale right now and today is the last day which means all daily bundles until now will be up again RIGHT NOW! (EDIT: Oops actually the last day is tomorrow op.
